Thomas Kidd’s little book Who is an Evangelical is a good resource that offers a traditional answer with which I agree. On a more provocative note, historian Matthew Sutton has recently published an article in which he argues evangelicalism is actually a post-war religio-political coalition that has little to do with theology. You should read the article.
