John 14:26 for the apostles or us?

Topic tags

John 14:25-26 says, “... the Holy Spirit... he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." Was that a promise of the work of the Holy Spirit in the apostles only, or is it also for us today?

It was a promise Jesus made to only His disciples that the Holy Spirit would help them remember and reliably write the Gospels. We benefit from this only by having a reliable NT.

It was a promise to the disciples and also to us. Jesus thereby promised the Holy Spirit would help us remember the Scriptures as He wills us to in our lives.

It was promise only to the disciples. But I believe that the Holy Spirit does help us remember the Word at appropriate times.

Here's the full text of the choices:

  1. It was a promise Jesus made to only His disciples that the Holy Spirit would help them remember and reliably write the Gospels. We benefit from this only by having a reliable NT.
  2. It was a promise to the disciples and also to us. Jesus thereby promised the Holy Spirit would help us remember the Scriptures as He wills us to in our lives.

The way I look at application of pretty much any passage is to ask, among other things, “In what ways am I/is my role like or unlike the people in the passage?” Answering that question using Scripture is a way of using Scripture to interpret Scripture.

In this case, Scripture informs me that I’m not an apostle but I do have a number of things in common with apostles. So if we look at the kinds of things believers are all called to do, apostles or not, we find the overlap with the apostles in the text here.

We’re all called to give an answer (1 Pet 3:15), sometimes spontaneously. So to the degree we are properly doing the same things apostles did, we can expect the same kinds of help.

(I’m simplifying for brevity. Other passages with related truths could condition that a good bit more or possibly even eliminate it. But it’s the starting point and off hand nothing comes to mind that would make this promise an exception.)

(Edit: Also poll options should be wrapping correctly now for people who haven’t voted yet. I think that is fixed. Now to get the radio buttons to stay with their text… 🤔
Edit2: Got it I think.)
