My parents’ marriage was destroyed in part by domestic violence, and one of the huge realities is that in these cases, walking away from a bad situation is believed to be walking away from one’s whole life. So pushing someone to walk away is in a very real way akin to pushing them off a cliff.

I would also guess that it could be very helpful to have some resources lined up for the hypothetical case that could become very literal. “We have a place for you to live, we know who can help you with healthcare/legal issues/etc…..whenever you are ready.”
