"For us, it's a gift, a real gift to be able to homeschool our children."

German Homeschooling Family Seeks Asylum in Canada The German law forbidding homeschooling was established by the Nazis in 1938. The law has been upheld in recent years by the courts, and in 2006, the country’s highest criminal court ruled that the government could seize children whose parents attempt to homeschool on the basis of conscience. The European Court of Human Rights also upheld the law in 2006.

why don’t these folks want to relocate to some country in europe? surely it would be less disruptive for their family to move to austria or switzerland.

[ChrisC] why don’t these folks want to relocate to some country in europe? surely it would be less disruptive for their family to move to austria or switzerland.

Switzerland is not an EU country, and immigration would probably be just as complicated there as in Canada or the U.S. Theoretically, under EU law, they should be allowed to move to any EU country, so Austria seems like it would be an easier choice. The article is pretty short on details, though, so if there were reasons not to move somewhere in the EU, they were not made clear.
