Kanye West to appear at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church

“… both West and Osteen have been talking quite often recently, particularly since West has continued to profess his devotion to God.” - Christian Post

Wish I could say I didn’t see that coming, but serious doctrinal error of some kind was very likely. Kanye has a new convert’s zeal, but he went straight to leading services without being taught in the faith. Celebrity isn’t good for anyone, least of all new converts. Three years in the desert of Damascus would be a better strategy. (Gal 1.17-18)

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

Here’s an interesting article about the subject.

Seriously, while this is saddening, what do we expect when charismatic churches have fallen for prosperity theology for decades? We need to pray that Kanye is blessed with a way out of the zoo he’s inhabited for a long time.

When Kanye’s family (wife especially) stops posting near naked pictures all over the Twittersphere, I’ll start being interested in wondering whether he is born again or not. Until call me uninterested and unimpressed.

I missed the part of the Bible that instructs us to judge another person’s salvation based on the actions of their unsaved family members.

Quite the uncharitable statement, Mark.

I don’t think we should be *interested (in the voyeuristic sense), but Kanye’s profession of faith is of interest because (a.) he’s a huge celebrity and it’s unavoidable for many of us, and (b.) we should always rejoice when a lost soul finds salvation through repentance and faith. We should also be praying for him because he faces pressures and temptations that none of us can even begin to fathom. Thankfully, Kanye has a Savior who has faced far greater pressures and temptations.

As far as his equally famous wife is concerned, if I was discipling Kanye, I think I would counsel him to tread slowly and carefully where she’s concerned. While I appreciate his zeal for holiness demonstrated in the much mocked (by the unsaved) video of him telling her how much her immodest clothes hurts his soul, preserving their marriage should be of far greater concern than foisting new found ethics of things like modesty on a very wealthy and famous person in her own right. Love her, serve her, pray for her, and gently yet consistently share the gospel with her - that would be my counsel to Kanye. So, and circling back to Mark’s comment - wow!

Keep in mind that Mrs. West is not claiming the kind of transformation her husband says he’s had. (and I hope he’s right and this is just an aberration) Suffice it to say that he’s got his work/prayer cut out for him as he tries to lead her away from what’s made her rich—showing everything to the camera except that which requires actually swallowing it. He asked her to be more modest, and her fashion firm is selling pasties, and I’m not talking about the Yooper/Cornish comfort food, either. This is a brilliant picture of 1 Corinthians 7’s admonition for the believer to live in peace with the unbeliever if possible, but if not, to let the unbeliever go in peace.

Not only that, but she’s been public about her struggle with being who she is and learning to accommodate Kanye’s requests to dress more modestly. Pray for both of them, especially Kanye.

Please forgive my ignorance, as I don’t keep up with the Karsashians, or rappers in general.

Praying for Kanye… ok, but don’t you have a ton of stuff closer to home?

The trials and tribulations of a supposedly converted rapper, internet sensation, and cultural icon is not on my radar. Just being honest.

when the local bordello owner says he got saved… Until he divests of the business, there isn’t much to base his conversion on.

And to be honest, I am scratching my head as to why people posting at a place like SI even care!

Mark, keep in mind that when seriously rich people get married, they tend to retain title to their own businesses. Hence the “brothel” to which you refer—and keep in mind that the infamous sex tape and Playboy pictorial were released in 2007—really belongs to Mrs. West. In the past 12 years, however, her body of work is more gross immodesty, and is not directly comparable to a brothel. I’m no fan of her work, but let’s not overstate the case, OK?

Why do I care about the Wests? Well, if Mr. West is really saved, it matters if we pray for him, no?

That comment just made me remember the Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda movie The Cheyenne Social Club …

Tyler is a pastor in Olympia, WA and works in State government.

I learned the word watching my favorite movie as a child, Patton. George C Scott as Patton takes command in the deert and goes into the barracks and sees a pin-up girl picture on the wall. He scans it, nods, then tears it down, saying, “this is a barracks, not a bordello.”

You need to loosen up a bit… and learn the difference between “is” and “like”.

Your comparison suggests that not only is Kim’s business Kanye’s fault, but also that it qualifies as a whorehouse. Yes, that is objectionable, and if we don’t “get” that, God help us as we try to interact with new believers, especially minorities with troubled backgrounds like Kanye.
