Liberal UMC regional body rejects cutting funds to overseas conservative churches; calls it 'white privilege'

“In fact, this withholding is primarily expressed in Caucasian congregations whose perception is that their entitlement to control others with money is an expression of white privilege,” the California-Nevada Annual Conference said. - Christian Post

For those who haven’t been following the UMC, the reason defunding the international churches got on the agenda at all was that the majority of African UMC churches voted a while against revising the UMC’s long standing sexual conduct standards. The American majority was (is) for loosening up a lot on homosexuality etc.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

….is whether those U.S. representatives to the global meeting were appointed by the bishops, or by their churches. The answer to that question—I suspect there are elements of both—is going to have a lot to do with how theologically conservative UMC churches like the one my grandmother attends are going to stick with the UMC, or whether they will leave like many ELCA congregations did half a decade back. There is also the question of what the theologically liberal congregations are going to do when the African/Asian congregations simply outnumber them—will they hold to outdated representation structures, or will they allow the denomination as a whole to become loosely evangelical?

Whatever the answers, it’s going to be a battle royale, and it’s fascinating to see one aspect of liberalism, the rejection of white privilege, being expressed as a counter to another aspect, the support of non-traditional sexual relationships. Spread some sawdust on the floor, this one is going to get bloody.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.

I found that interesting as well.
