Ark of the Covenant may be hidden in Africa, biblical scholars believe

The Jeremiah quote clearly refers to the time when the “throne of the LORD” is in Jerusalem (Jer 3:17), so not until the millennial reign of Christ. This matches Ezekiel’s revelation, where the ark of the covenant is the one piece missing (not even mentioned) from the restored Temple in chapter 40 and following.
I still tend to lean toward it not being hidden anywhere on earth (though it may be, but Rev 11:19 tends to infer it was assumed into heaven). If it is destroyed and/or unaccessible, then a replica may in fact “be made again” for the Temple that is yet to be built that will be defiled during the desolation to come (Mt 24:15, cf. Dan 12:11, 2 Thes 2:4), and if so, that gives some more sense to the Jeremiah 3:16 statement that “it shall not be made again,” i.e. it was made once, then again, but will not be made again once the Throne of God is in Jerusalem; however, it may mean that the third Temple is using the original ark or is going to function without the ark. The reason I say “more sense” to the phrase “not be made again” is that if the ark has no need of a reconstruction at least once, why mention a reconstruction at all?
Anyway, my main point is that I do not believe Jer 3:16 has any relevance to the ark in relation to the coming third Temple construction, but is related to the Temple that will follow that one that Ezekiel talks of.

My guess is that it was destroyed as the bronze serpent was because it became an idol or object of veneration. That’s just my idle speculation on it.

It was likely destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC when Jerusalem was sacked. It’s always possible they carried it off to Babylon. But, it’s gone.
