America Is in the Grips of a Fundamentalist Revival ...But It’s Not Christian.
“I know full-well that there is nothing original about observing that many Americans have transformed politics into a religion. The phrase ‘Great Awokening’ is a direct callback to arguably the most significant Christian religious revival of our nation’s past. It’s not original, nor is it surprising. We’re hard-wired for a spiritual purpose.” - David French

D. Doran et al. complain about French’s use of the term “fundamentalist” this way… https://frenchpress.thedispatch.com/p/america-is-in-the-grips-of-a-fund…
My reply: Cultures change and language changes. You can’t usually take a term back once the language has moved on. His understanding of biblical fundamentalism is flawed but the article is about our national idolatries.
These guys pretty much made sure the term would die as a name for a movement to defend the core beliefs of the Christian faith against the notions of theological liberalism.
Edit to add: French’s piece is also about the coercivism and authoritarianism that significant parts of both the left and the right now see as the way forward.
