Europe is filled with monuments to faith, and is one of the most faithless areas in the world. So is Israel. On the light side, Europe is also filled with naked public statues, and thankfully most do not take that hint, either. It would seem that the persuasive power of a monument is minimal at best.
Don’t get me wrong; I love tastefully done monuments—this one was borderline at best IMO—but I think we can get way too worked up over these things. (my favorites are those I saw in the Rheinland—someone’s life was saved by God’s providence, and they put a little statue in a tiny little nook in a retaining wall near where it happened…OK, yes, generally Catholic, but it’s beautiful gratitude remembered for centuries)
Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
