Thanksgiving Eating

Forum category
In our day of health food, exercise craze, etc., we find it easy to minimize the Bible’s connection of abundant food with his blessing. When we eat well, many of us feel guilty rather than thankful.

Solomon enjoyed Thanksgiving every day:

I Kings 4:22-23
Solomon’s daily provisions were thirty cors of fine flour and sixty cors of meal, ten head of stall-fed cattle, twenty of pasture-fed cattle and a hundred sheep and goats, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks and choice fowl.
We seem to prefer the last item this time of year!

I was looking at old threads and i saw this one. I thought it would be a good time of year to bump it up.

It’s interesting that, even in Solomon’s day, there was a differenciation between the stall-fed cattle and the pasture-fed cattle. Still, I don’t think any of Solomon’s cattle experienced the conditions of today’s factory farms, and none of Solomon’s food was as processed as the food we buy these days.

Anyway, God does still expect us to be thankful, even for processed, factory-raised food. (And we wouldn’t be able to feed as many people as we do in this country if we didn’t have those large farms.)

I just read an article by John Stossel- http://townhall.com/columnists/JohnStossel/2010/11/17/natural_isnt_alwa… Natural Isn’t Always Better this morning- interesting research about corn-fed vs. pasture fed cattle.

I think the reason we feel guilty sometimes is that we are often disconnected from our food- it doesn’t grow on our land, we don’t have a hand in its production… it’s packaged and shelved and we don’t know where it comes from or what’s in it. My kids are always wondering- and asking- how things are made. We are always getting DVDs from the library of Food Network and ‘how its made’ type shows. I think I see a bit more appreciation in them when they sit at the table and consider the work that went into what they are enjoying. And since we’ve started gardening a bit more, and the kids have really enjoyed consuming the fruit of their labors.

If you do eat us, it is only because you were predestined to do so.

Thanks for the link Susan. I don’t buy into most of those health craze ideas.

Also, good work on having your kids watch those videos. When I travel for work, and if there is any time at the end of the day, those are usually the only shows on TV worth watching at the hotel. (or Myth Busters) Which is a bit funny, I suppose, because when I travel for work, I travel to food production or packaging sites. (I work for a large food production company)

For Thanksgiving this year, my wife and I are taking it easy (she is the one taking it easy as I am cooking) and I am making chorizo for brunch and pollo con mole with spanish rice for dinner. I know, not very American but it will be just us this year, so we can do what we want.
