Premarital Counseling Material

Forum category
What material do you all use or suggest for premarital counseling? Do you use your own material or is there some good material out there that you can suggest? Thanks!

sorry i’m not answering your question, but my sister always said that premarital counselling should happen the first year after the wedding …

she’s right!!

:D

Generally, I use “Called Together” by Steve & Mary Prokopchak & insist on at least 6 sessions. I’ve become aware of several problems in young marriages of late, and would love to be able to insist on “premarital counseling” after the wedding. Unfortunately, the pastor can’t insist on it like he can before the wedding. There’s also the problem of couples not sticking around for very long after marriage.

After 15 years of marriage, my husband and I just did Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. We wish that we could go back in time and do this as part of our premarital counseling. I haven’t seen or heard of one premarital counseling course that spends any length of time on finances, yet everyone admits that this is what causes most stress in marriage. That’s my 2 cents. :)

I do 6 sessions as well. I use mainly my own stuff. I do financial as one of them. I also do at least one or 2 after the wedding sessions if it is possible.

I do the Prepare/Enrich inventory test to target trouble spots.

Everyone gets the Les/Leslie Parrot book, Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts. I have them get the workbooks and do selected exercises.

Then I have handouts we go over on a variety of subjects, including the 3 big problems:

1. The Jer. 17:9 deceitful heart syndrome (which is why everyone thinks they got the short end of the stick); we lie to ourselves & remember so that we are always LESS to blame (not perfect, just less)

2. Most men are afraid of their wives and the wives are oblivious to it (thus resulting in passive aggressive)

3. Not believing your spouse (the “prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown” syndrome)

For those with trouble communicating (as seen in the inventory), I use Backus’ excellent book, Telling Each Other the Truth.

"The Midrash Detective"

Ed, what do you mean, most men are afraid of their wives? And how would you go about correcting it?
