Known issues in 3.2

By SharperIron on Fri, 06/29/12
Forum category
Community

This is where we’ll post stuff we know is broken in the latest update… and that we’re working on (or planning to).

  • First known issue: lots of older forum posts (as in, before 6/29/12) contain leftover BBCODE here and there. In particular, images inserted using the tag are not converted to html and are not displaying images. Some links are broken also. Fix is in progress.
  • Signatures containing bbcode will have to be edited by users… replace with html
  • “Mark all read” etc. links missing
  • “My Threads & Comments” block not visible
  • No spell checki
  • Some fit problems on smaller screens
  • Signatures not appearing in most posts

NewPage 404 error

Fri, 06/29/12

At 0807 PDT, I clicked on the Front Page Forum button and got a Page 404 error.

Hoping to shed more light than heat..

NewI'm so old

Fri, 06/29/12

I already miss the old format.

Maybe my kids can teach me how to use this new fangled stuff.

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?

NewOk - just saw something. You

Fri, 06/29/12

Ok - just saw something. You used to have the listing of different pages - forum, blogroll, front page, etc. - at the top and the bottom of the page. This was convenient after reading long lists of posts because you didn’t have to scroll back to the top of the page to return to the forum, or go anywhere else. Any way to add those buttons back to the bottom of the pages?

NewHere's another. My main forum

Fri, 06/29/12

Here’s another. My main forum says there is 1 new post in the SI Experiance page, but I don’t see anything listed as new there. There used to be a Mark All Threads/Posts Read option to clear those phantom posts, but I cant find it now/

NewThe full 404 message reads

when I click on Front Page Article Archieve. I don’t see a simple Front Page Article forum.

This is the url being pointed to:

New404 fixed

Fri, 06/29/12

OK, the 404 on Front page article archive is fixed.

Not sure what happened to the “mark all read” links. We’ll track it down.

Edit: there is a Forum Tools dropdown that contains an option to mark everything ‘read.’ This has been relocated to the top of the page where you’d more expect to see it.

NewLeft pane

Sat, 06/30/12

In the New Posts view the left pane had a list of threads that I have both posted in and started, above the list of threads with no comments. That is missing from this update.

Also I have a MOD box by my name!

For some raeson the slepl chceker is not wroking and some of us ( especially Tetreau!) need it back (when I am in ‘Source’ and right-click on a word it gives the correct spelling)

I am using Chrome if that makes a difference.

NewThanks

Sat, 06/30/12

I appreciate the “live beta testing” help :D

There is a new “My Threads & Comments” block that replaces the old tabbed one. The permissions were set too high. You should be able to see it now.

I’m not seeing a MOD by your name… but there is a broken link on the user icon at the moment… I suspect that the MOD might be showing because a switch in icons (the new mod icon became the user icon because it looks more ‘usery’ and less ‘moderatory’). In short, try flushing your browser cache http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser’s-Cache#Chrome_v10_.2B

(Be sure to just check the “Empty the cache” box to avoid losing history and lots of other goodies)

Browser cache can behave in unexpected ways sometimes.

Spellchecker: Looks like one of the things we loose with a WYSIWYG editor is browser-based spell checking. However, there is a button for that. Should be appearing shortly.

Edit: button is there now… “SCAYT” means Spell Check As You Type. It’s a little slow but seems to work.

NewResolution oddity

Sat, 06/30/12

Three PC’s in the house. On two (with more traditional resolutions) it looks great. On my netbook, running at 1024 x 600 (common on netbooks), it breaks up the lead article, putting a large gap after the first paragraph and pic before completing the article. This is true in all common browsers at this resolution. Emailing a pic to Aaron.

NewTable

Sat, 06/30/12

What’s happening w/the lead article is that the bullet points are inside a table. When you get a small-width screen, the table can’t shrink, so it drops down to the first place it can fit.

(Used a table because there is an old, old html weakness that keeps bulleted items from lining up right next to images)

Short version: that’ll happen once in a while if there is a non-shrinkable element in the post that is too wide to fit between the columns. (There is actually an css trick for making the bullets thing work right w/o tables—in the newest browsers. But it’s a bit hard to find and I don’t remember it… Got motivated to search some more yesterday though).

Anyway, there are alot of 1024 screens out there so we’ll try to avoid those problems. (Can’t imagine how it fits on a phone!)

Edit: got it… at least, in most browsers. For those interested in the geeky stuff, the trick is overflow:hidden. Great thread on it at Stack Overflow.

NewResolution

Sat, 06/30/12

Mike -

It’s usually problematic for monitor screens running at ‘odd’ resolutions to display things properly. ‘Odd’ resolutions being ones that are not traditional resolutions like 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, or 1400x1050. The other thing you could try doing is either downshifting your resolution OR plugging in a spare monitor and running the monitor at that resolution.

If you go to this site and try one of the resolutions in the red box, that may help.

If you have enough screen width the verticle is not usually important in browsers. We do want to stay compat w/1024 width for a few more years. I think this is fixed, but I’ll check it on my netbook when I get to where it is. That unit is also 1024x600.

As for other odd resolutions, SI looks pretty decent on aything 1024 or wider. Once you get really, really, wide, you just have a lot of margin at the sides because we’ve got a max width limit - just to keep the layout making visual sense within a range. For a while, I was using a 1080p screen, and it looked OK full screen on that (but text too small for 1080p laptops at 15”).

Newthreads & comments

Sun, 07/01/12

Thanks for fixing that but there was more than 1 tab, and they differentiated between threads commented in and threads started, now they are all grouped together.

NewTabs

Sun, 07/01/12

When we first created the tabbed version a year or so ago, there were a fair amount of requests to get the tabs into a single list. Users found they’d start a thread, then forget about it and when others posted in it, it didn’t show on the “thread’s I’ve commented in” list…

This version, if it works properly, will display the threads you’ve started even when you have no comments in them… so if others post, they should sort to the top along with threads w/new comments (that you have commented in). In short, the theory is that there is no longer any need to know the difference between a thread you’ve started and one you’ve commented in.

But if there is an advantage to being able to see the threads separately, there may be a best of both worlds option… maybe a couple of filters to just display threads-started or threads-commented-in but default to displaying both sorted by most recent comment.

Had to do some some changes to cookie handling and that probably messes up Persisistant Login for some folks. Your Persistent Login sessions have been cleared so you might be OK now. There are a couple of other steps we can take to clear cookie logjams but you’re probably good to go now.

Good. Sometimes editing a single line in a config file can have unexpected results… will hv to remember to leave that one alone.

NewHmmm

Tue, 07/10/12

Not sure what to suggest at this point. Everything is correct in our config (at least, same as it’s been for the last few years). Any changes to your browser as far you know? I love Chrome but one thing I hate about it is that it updates itself so aggressively. But I guess the more relevant question is do your cookie settings allow the cookie to be set?

In any case, it would probably be worth it to remove all your SI cookies. There might one hanging around that is messing things up:

  • Settings -> Advanced -> Content Settings (button under Privacy) -> All cookies and site data (button).
  • You can key sharperiron in the search box and get a list, then remove those
  • Next time you sign in, you’ll get a new cookie. Should be smooth sailing after that

Anybody else having trouble with not staying logged in? Works in my tests, but maybe there is some set of conditions that breaks it and we can track that down.

NewIE issues?

Fri, 07/27/12

Due to issues using Firefox for my on-line classes at Liberty, I’m having to use IE now. The pages do not show up the same in both browsers. Is there a setting I need to change in order to get the Foundry to show up right?

Something broke… but apparently mostly in Internet Explorer.

Looking into it.

Edit: should be good now. Holler if you’re still seeing it.

(As usual, this was human error not computer error… but don’t tell anybody. I’m blaming it on “the server” … better yet, I’ll blame it on Microsoft. How dare their browser not kindly overlook coding errors like Chrome and Firefox do!)

Actually, I was seeing those page problems as well, though I was running Firefox. However, since I was viewing this site through a proxy at the time, there may have been a misinterpretation of the coding errors by the proxy that caused Firefox to have issues displaying the pages. No issues now, though.
