BJU unveils new academic visual identity

good to me. Though, the herald in me (from my misspent youth), isn’t crazy about the two shades of blue (azure) separated by the white (argent) borders. I would have gone with a blazon of on a field of Argent first and third and Azure second and fourth a saltire gules (red); in the first a cross argent, in the second a the lamp of truth azure, in the third a Bear salient argent, in the fourth an open Bible azure.

I went with red because I wanted a color to definitely separate the blue and white.

“Fundamentalist” certainly has baggage. “Orthodox” does too, though. Many would see it and wonder “Greek, Russian, Coptic or Armenian?” (and some others I’ve probably left out)

@Rob… I’d like more colors, too personally. But in this day it’s more logo than crest… so you have a lot of logo styling going on.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

Aaron, I have no problems with it as a logo. As I noted, I do have some training in heraldry. I am not even close to being an expert. But, the rule of no tincture\metal\fur on tincture\metal\fur is the first lesson of a herald in the English tradition . BJ just barely gets by using argent bordering to separate the azure fields.

Looks good. And maybe, Rob Fall, it is a symbol, and not heraldry. I mean, really, the “rules” of heraldry are pretty much irrelevant to 99.99999% of the population, aren’t they?

where y’all are coming from. However, give a guy a break. When I see something like what BJU has put out, I see it with herald’s eyes. Sorry, but that’s the way I’m wired.

Why can’t y’all just say, “Rob that’s interesting, but in this case irrelevant.” At this point, I feel like I’m being told to keep my opinions to myself.

While I agree that modern organizations are probably not going to care about the “rules of heraldry,” I have to admit I found your comment interesting. Keep it up. I like learning new things!

I wonder if BJU did not really start using the term fundamental more prominently until the Billy Graham controversy beginning in the late ’50s. Sure they were fundamental but this ad above is just 5 years before they moved to Greenville.

They could work the bruin into their motto if they picked a new rhyme. From “Petimus Credimus” to “Ursus Excursus.” :)

This is a small issue - as a matter of fact it’s not even an issue but merely a question. Do I remember that another fundamentalist school out in the Southeast has the Bruin’s as it’s mascot? I think Piedmont or Appalachian or one of the schools out there has the same mascot as BJ. It’s probably no big deal - is that an issue? Perhpas BJ would not play Piedmont or Appalachian Bible College because of the size of school it is vis-a-vis the others? Just curious.

Dr. Joel Tetreau serves as Senior Pastor, Southeast Valley Bible Church (sevbc.org); Regional Coordinator for IBL West (iblministry.com), Board Member & friend for several different ministries;

In California, we have the UC Berkley “Cal Bears” and the UCLA “Bruins.” And we survive.

Bob Jones Sr. was not enamored of the term “fundamentalist,” though in 1951, he said that he did not want to abandon it entirely because it meant something to the general public. At least before the mid-1950s, Jones seemed to consider fundamentalists simply one strand of a larger group of conservatives who were opposed to modernism. In 1949, Jones said that “some of the worst enemies this school has are those technical, dead fundamentalists”—by which I think he meant Bible teachers emphasizing prophecy—and he imagined himself holding the middle ground between them and the “wild fanatics,” perhaps the proto-charismatics.
