Another reason to enjoy tomatoes

Wonder why the hyper-fundamentalists never jumped on the Christian tomato band wagon.

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?

we “enjoy” things because Islamists decry them?

Wha?

Not much of a jump unless the thread title means something. And, I was referring to the thread title (having not nested the comment under the bacon comment). And the thread is called “another reason to enjoy tomatoes”—which would point to the idea that (among other motivations) one can enjoy tomatoes because Islamists decry them as “Christian.” In all seriousness, what purpose does this serve to say this? Oh—(someone whispers in his ear)—oh! Oh, I get it! So it’s not serious! So that’s why it is posted in “Islam” not in “funny things fundies post” section.

I liked BLT’s before I even knew what a Muslim was!

And I still like them

Perhaps airport security screeners should think about serving tomato soup to all fliers. Those who refuse to eat it will be placed in a special line for further screening. Terrorist problem solved!

I wonder… if one were to give Obama some tomato soup, would he eat it?

It’s answering the ridiculous with the ridiculous. No one is seriously suggesting that we can enjoy tomatoes more because Muslims reject them.

is there anything related to Gospel-centeredness that would undergird the propriety of using this kind of humor to mock those who embrace Islam, or have grown up in families where they have been taught to embrace Islam?

I recognize the ridiculous aspect of slicing the tomato the wrong direction. Would we quickly hide this SI webpage if our Islamic neighbor came over?

We do have a standard for ‘appropriate’ mockery- Prov. 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

I wouldn’t hide this page from an Islamic neighbor. Plus, I have a yard full of tomato plants- am I supposed to pull them all out so as not to ‘offend’ my Islamic neighbor? Should Kroger create a tomato free section for Muslims?

While I think we do need to be careful about how we discuss such topics, Christians aren’t prohibited from ‘offending’ those who preach a false gospel.

I did not say remove tomatoes—that would be a stupid thing for me to say. As to the Kroger thing, well, I didn’t bring up grocery. As to offense, instead of responding to those who differ in ways similar to the ways some victim-rights or political rights group respond to their opponents, (with mocking and derision), what if we let the Good News be the offensive thing? (Sounds Pauline to me).

Would not someone raised in an Islamic household see the OP and perhaps think: “another reason to despise Christians?” (Notice, no Gospel has offended them, no truth has offended them, but we offended them—not by posting the tomato thing, but by mocking it, and mockingly saying “hey, here’s another reason to eat something, because it would offend some Islamic people”). Now, that’s a knee slapper.

But, hey, at least we one-upped them with some humor, and made the fundies chuckle.

As to the Proverbs reference, I can see using the foolishness of the tomato FB post (from the Salafists) in an apologetic sense, but the mockery of SI’s OP isn’t apologetic in nature. Rather it feels like an effort at “aren’t dem dere Moslems stoopid?” Mebbe it succeeded at that—well, I thought it did. But, I guess I don’t get SI’s humor.

Guys, I’m bettered by essential real, intelligent natural genius. Piled high, it’s like, I see their intelligence now easily, so…

Unless nothing’s clarified, look elsewhere…

No, of course we wouldn’t hide it. Muslims have a sense of humor also.

And if you only knew what Jews say about Christians behind our backs…
