I did not write the resolution you question, but I think epidemic is probably a good word for the problem.

1 : affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community, or region at the same time
2 a : excessively prevalent
b : contagious
3 : characterized by very widespread growth or extent : of, relating to, or constituting an epidemic

I think a good case cold be made that just about every version of the definition of the word fit.
