D. Charles Caldwell Ryrie (b. 1925) has died only weeks before his ninety-first birthday. Dr. Ryrie taught Systematic Theology at Dallas Theological Seminary before serving as dean of doctoral studies for more than two decades until his retirement in 1983.

Over the years I’ve had a variety of occasions to glean from Dr. Ryrie’s work in the Gospel ministry. I am especially thankful for his work in the area of dispensationalism……as well as general Bible study. My heart goes out to his friends and family in these difficult days. I know Dr. Ryrie has some personal struggles in the midst of life and ministry and yet I understand he was faithful to the end. May God enable us all to do the same!

Ryrie was the author of more than 50 books and editor of the Ryrie Study Bible, which includes more than 10,000 footnotes by him.

In the preface to the original 1978 edition, he wrote, “The Bible is the greatest of all books; to study it is the noblest of all pursuits; to understand it, the highest of all goals.” The Ryrie Study Bible has gone on to sell more than 2.6 million copies.

This man has influenced and helped me so much through his amazing writings! He was a legend in his own time, probably the leading theologian of the 1970’s, when (I think) Dallas Seminary and Moody Bible Institute were chosen by Time Magazine’s “Born Again” article (in 1976 or so) as the epicenter of the Born Again Movement, if my memory serves me correctly (I am a bit hazy on this, I admit).

My Ryrie Study Bible (ESV) is the Bible I use. I am going through his “Basic Theology” with a couple of guys I mentor.

I will look forward to meeting him in glory! We lost a mighty champion here on earth!
