Conservative Music, Separation, and Family Radio

A few weeks, someone came up to me after a sermon and gave me a pamphlet by Family Radio’s Harold Camping in which he announces that the rapture will happen on May 21, 2011 and that the end of the world will occur on October 21, 2011. While I heard about his prediction a few years ago, I did not give it much attention. In order to respond to this person, I decided to take a deeper look into Camping’s teachings. Years ago Camping predicted the rapture and was wrong. Now, record amounts of heretical teaching abound from this man and his radio station.

In spite of the abundance of heresy, you can turn on his station and still hear some of the music from some of the top fundamental recordings. I also have learned there are Christians who believe that Family Radio has awesome music, so they listen to the music but turn it off when teaching comes on.

What biblical responsibilities do Christians and music companies have when it comes to cooperating in any way with this radio station, whether it be listening or allowing their recordings?

Discussion

but I stopped listening to Family Radio a long time ago for this very reason. Camping had a big article in [I think] The Philly Inquirer in when he predicted the return of Christ in…1994. My Dad called me in and asked if we thought that we’d be going to heaven on that day. Mom had a better answer than I did.

The final straw for me was when Camping started preaching the need to leave their local churches and form family churches based off of the radio teaching of himself and FR. Sadly, I know of several who did that and are no longer in local assemblies.

Sounds like he is a false prophet and we should not be listening to his station. If the record companies are knowledgable of his doctrine and are legally able to stop him from playing their music, I believe that they have a biblical obligation to do so. However, I don’t think that the record companies or perfomers have that much control over venues.

For instance, when the Dixie Chicks demeaned the President at a concert, several country stations dropped them from their play lists. But I don’t know if the Dixie Chicks would have been able to demand that their songs be removed from a pro-administration country station.

Or you could look into Rush Limbaugh’s bumper tune, “My City Was Gone”. http://ask.metafilter.com/48170/how-did-rush-limbaugh-get-rights-to-my-…

I’m (unfortunately) very familiar with Camping and his false doctrines. One of his relatives is a member of our church so we get to discuss the teachings of “uncle Harold” often.

The man’s doctrine is downright wicked, and his prediction of a date for the End is the least of his offenses. He is an extreme allegorist, finding types and hidden meaning in virtually every verse, with those allegories especially about Christ being the primary message of Scripture. So Noah and the ark is really a type of… fill in the blank. It is impossible for him to receive a counter-argument since he is the allegorical interpretive authority on the text. He is

He is a hyper-Calvinist, and I’ve heard him responding to callers on the radio asking, “how can I be saved?” with, “there’s nothing you can do to be saved. If you’re the elect God will give you the faith to believe. In the meantime all you can do is pray and hope you’re one of the elect.”

Even worse is his new teaching that the End is the End of the Church Age. No one is to attend church anymore, as that is associated with AntiChrist and the mark of the Beast. If you persist in attending church it proves you’re not one of the elect. So his followers are to sit home and listen to Family Radio, read the Bible and so forth.

He also teaches that the marriage covenant is so inviolate that if you’re divorced and remarried you should divorce your second mate, and try to get back together with the first one. If they won’t come back then you must remain single at all costs.

Keep looking down, Eph 2:6
