Restored Church of God Book Ad on SI??
I am now seeing ads for a book from the “Restored Church of God.” I looked them up and they are a branch from the Worldwide Church of God.
Is this really a wise idea?
Post just to push this so it can be more readily seen.
I think the ads key off from your own searches and cookies. My guess is that if you clear your cookies, you’ll see a different set of ads

Yep, I had an add for an auction site on mine. I bought a vehicle recently on an online auction.
thong bikini ad that was VERY revealing…. on the bottom right corner of my SI page.
I cannot recall searching for thong bikini’s before.
Once again, I am not sure about the ad engine you have aligned with.
Is this just me?
Yes, it’s your device.

Thank you for your certainty about how ads on SI are being picked to appear on my screen.

Test it: How:
- You probably have multiple devices & multiple browsers
- Clear cookies ..
- Do a search for something
- Visit S/i and see the ads
Yesterday I searched for fur caps … today ads all over the place for the same
Those ads are absolutely served up by the cache of internet traffic data on your device. I’ve gotten so weird/unwanted ads this way and clearing the cache always fixes it.
Congratulations, Josh! That’s exciting news!

That ad box is Google fed. One of the reasons we didn’t use one for more than a decade was the potential that some users would misunderstand how they work.
Basically, as I understand it, Google uses algorithms that point ads based on your demographic info as well as your cookies/web use, and search data. So basically they’re pushing an ad that the algorithm says a high % of people in your demographic with your web history would be interested in. There is usually a way to report an offensive ad or indicate that you don’t want to see it again. You can click on that tiny ad icon in the upper right corner and usually get some options.
Recently I was shopping for coffee mugs for Christmas and got an ad featuring a pretty raunchy mug. Used the “Don’t show me this ad” thing and that was effective.
I’m certainly open to some other ad options though, if there’s a better option… it’s not something I have much expertise in.
Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.
I switched to Firebox, with full tracking blocking enabled, for the past few months across all my devices. I also turned off location tracking on all my devices. I changed my default search engine to Bing, too. As a result, I literally get no ads based on my browsing history anywhere.
None.
I have done everything I can to cut Google out of my life.

Did you mean Firefox? I’ve been running the Edge Preview edition (based on Chromium) and I like it. I’ve also blacklisted some of the Google Adsense domains on my personal router.

Yes, Firefox - typo. I have tracking protection enabled and do not allow tracking cookies. No targeted ads ever. And, using Bing is awesome. There really is no difference. I Kissed Google Goodbye …

an ad for a law firm that does federal cases. I’ve never once looked at a law firm on the internet.
What scares me though, is does Google know something I don’t about what I might need in the near future? :-)
