Pope wants better translation of phrase on temptation in 'Our Father' prayer

The Lord's Prayer

Pope Francis has suggested he wants to make a change to The Lord’s Prayer, widely known among the faithful as the “Our Father.” Specifically, the Catholic leader said in an interview Wednesday he would prefer to adjust the phrase “lead us not into temptation,” saying that it too strongly suggested that God leads people to sin. “That is not a good translation,” the pope said, according to Reuters.

The author has no idea what he’s talking about:

It is a translation from the Latin vulgate, which was translated from ancient Greek, which was in turn translated from Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus.

What silliness.

As I understand it, it’s common for Roman Catholics to posit that the NT was originally written in Aramaic. It seems to be a cornerstone of their argument for the papacy from Matthew 16. It diminishes the difference between petros and petra if they both come from the Aramaic kepha. Of course there’s no evidence of an Aramaic original of Matthew or any other NT book, but that’s never stood in their way before.
