Quoting Quotes with Quotes in Them
Am I making any sense? :P

[Matthew]…limit the level of quotationsYou could edit the post to only include the text you want to quote. Maybe that is not what you are asking though?

My suggestion (or request) is to increase efficiency and usability by limiting what the “quote” button includes in the quote.

[Matthew Olmstead]Here’s an example: all I did was hit “quote” on the previous message and I get this (above) when I rather want this as a quote (below):[JohnBrian]That much I understand. ;)[Matthew]…limit the level of quotationsYou could edit the post to only include the text you want to quote. [Matthew Olmstead] That much I understand. ;)I understand I can edit out what I don’t want to quote, but it would be much easier if it would do it automatically. I don’t know if it’s possible; I’m just bringing it up in case it is.

[Jay C] Matt, I haven’t worked with the Coding/Admin side of SI, but as someone who works with databases, I’d be VERY surprised if there was a way to limit the inline quoting in the way that you described. Maybe there’s an add on that fixes this, but I think that any software that is used for forums probably grabs the entire quote from the first instance of [ quote ].Well, the old SI (2.0) did it.

[Matthew Olmstead]oops. forgot to disable smileys (err…can’t disable smileys). that should read 2 . 0[Jay C] Matt, I haven’t worked with the Coding/Admin side of SI, but as someone who works with databases, I’d be VERY surprised if there was a way to limit the inline quoting in the way that you described. That’s another thing: there’s no way to disable smileys

[Matthew Olmstead]Did it? I didn’t remember it doing so, but maybe I’m mistaken. I seem to recall spending a lot of time fixing quoted posts prior to hitting the reply button, but maybe that’s just me.[Jay C] Matt, I haven’t worked with the Coding/Admin side of SI, but as someone who works with databases, I’d be VERY surprised if there was a way to limit the inline quoting in the way that you described. [Matthew Olmstead] Well, the old SI (2.0 ) did it.the previous quoting scheme was always frustrating for me. i would much rather quickly delete what i don’t want than manually rebuild nested quotes to preserve some context.
As for disabling smilies, I wonder…
[notag]:)[/notag]
Yep. the [notag] [notag] [/notag] [/notag] BBCode tags will allow you to disable the automatic conversion to graphic smilies, but you have to type the tags manually around the text/symbols/tags you want left unconverted. And for your case that was (I’m assuming) accidental, the notag won’t help unless you go back and edit it in after you notice the weirdness. :D
There are pro’s and con’s to both approaches. Personally, I like nesting, but it does get messy after a quote of a quote of a quote, etc.
Currently, the folks who built the Quote Module for Drupal don’t have a solution for that, but it should be—theoretically—possible to add that feature in the future… and limit quote nesting to, say, two layers. That might be best of both worlds.
Actually, the dream setup would be to allow users to set their own default quote nesting depth! I’ll go see if anybody’s awake at drupal.org/project/quote and put in a feature request. (…. ok done)

Note to SI people: I searched ‘quote’. If people like it the way it is, fine. I just brought it up because it was different than 2.0

[Matthew Olmstead] Found this: http://drupal.org/node/279007, but the status is “won’t fix” so it may not work. That one’s on ver. 5 and we’re using ver.6. I put in a “feature request” so hopefully they’ll look at it even though they marked it “won’t fix” for ver. 5.
