When 97 Words Just Aren't Enough

FWIW, the BJU creed has always been a core commitment of BJU but it has not been an exhaustive one. For much/most of the University’s history the faculty had to subscribe to pre-trib eschatology, something not outlined in the creed. IOW, the creed is a non-negotiable but not the full extent of what someone must believe to be on faculty or in leadership at BJU. In fact, even BJU recognizes this. Consider this quote from their own website: “Our Creed highlights the core doctrines that unite us, but does not include more specific issues.“ This is followed by a link to a page with position statements that run a wide range of issues.

The bottom line is that for 96 years 97 words have not been enough. It would be a mistake to start thinking those 97 words cover everything that matters to a healthy educational ministry in the 21st century.

Wow, not sure I would have led with, “Shall the FBFI Win?” That sort of aligns oneself with the wrong side of the Fundamentalist/Modernist controversy.

Just to add to what Dave wrote, this reminds me of those who claim fundamentalism was only ever about the so-called 5 fundamentals. Fundamentalism was never just about those 5 fundamentals and the ethos of BJU was never just about those words in the creed.

Case in Point: Members of the Board of the FBFI passed a resolution declaring that music is a basis for biblical separation. A number of those who subscribe to the magazine (members) who are pastors do not agree with the resolution and no doubt use music in their churches that the FBFI board would not approve. I suspect someone might respond, "If they don't agree, then they can cancel their subscription/membership." Maybe they continue to subscribe (like I did) because there are some great articles in the magazine.

"Some things are of that nature as to make one's fancy chuckle, while his heart doth ache." John Bunyan

Crucially, the position papers are BJU's position papers. While they may sync with the PCA's, FBFI's, SBC's, IFCA's, ARP's, etc., they are BJU's positions.

May or may not be Brian's point, BTW.
