The Preacher's Library

Jay Adams: You used to be able to tell a lot about a preacher—and about his preaching—simply by walking into his library. If it was filled with catchy titles, how-to manuals, frothy experience-oriented fluff, as well as second-rate commentaries, you could know that isn’t the place to hang your hat as a church member.

NewHow to tell now....

Mon, 02/27/17

You simply listen to his sermon and listen to his references (explicit and implicit), and how he processes his logic. They say that good writing comes from good reading—and hence if the sermon is a mile wide and an inch deep, you infer that either he’s an exception, or he’s been reading a mile wide and an inch deep.

And sadly, reading a mile wide and an inch deep is a tragic way to do ministry, as the practicioners of this art end up saying a lot of things that aren’t consistent with Scripture.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.

NewWhen a pastor/preacher says
