Questions on A Library for a Third World Country

My pastor wants to develop a library for pastors in the Philippines. He wants me to research what is available in electronic form. We are of course talking about freeware not paid for programs. He is looking to put the library on one or more cds\dvds. So, internet only stuff is not in the scope of this request.

Off the top of my head, I know of On-line Bible. What else is out there?

The Christian Classics Ethereal Library has tons of resources. Some odd, some bad, but lots of great material.

They sell the PDFs, but you could convert the free plain text files to PDFs with relatively little effort. If a fixed-width font is not a problem, you could just print the files to a PDF writer.

Since you mentioned Online Bible, I will mention e-Sword, which you will find here. It is free and has many free add-ins, including dictionaries, commentaries, other books, and maps. It does not have the breadth of material in CCEL, but that is not its purpose. I highly recommend the product (no affiliation other than a satisfied user). The most significant limitation for me, now that I am writing theology papers for seminary, is that the resources do not have source pagination that I need for citations in my papers. For many, that is not a major issue.

An Update

As matters have developed

  1. How old are the oldest machines? This is unknown at the moment. We look to resolve it by communicating with our local contacts.
  2. The material needs to work without an personal internet connection. Internet cafés are one thing, internet in a pastor's office is another
  3. Do we put the stuff on CDs or DVDs? Tis goes to the first question.
  4. The receivers for the most part will have only a two year Bible institute education.
So, far Online Binble is in the lead as it has DOS and WIN 3.1x versons available. So, the folks won't need Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP/Vista machines.

I'm trying to keep this project on a K.I.S,S. basis.
