Has anyone watched the first episode of the series? It deals with the 19th century roots of Prohibition and total abstention.

Yeah I watched it. It provides quite a full picture of the 19th century forces that led to prohibition.

It shows

the total abstention philosophy grew out of real life concerns and problems. It wasn't something folks just pulled out of their pharisaical ears. The 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act are however another question all together.
