Personal experience

My last three secretaries were from a neighboring, like-minded church. I have a member of my church on staff at another church...I know it's different, but I love the message it communicates.

Hire the best candidate

Don't hire a church member just because he/she is a member

Easier to dismiss if not a member

It depends...

Are there qualified people within your own church?
Can you find people you can trust, and who have a good reputation?
Is it a paying job? Is it voluntary? Are you prepared for the possibility of what might happen if you have to fire/dismiss the person?

Like someone already said. If the job is temporary, or you are just testing out the person, it might be easier to let them go should some issue arise, if they are not members of the same church.

An outsider might be better at keeping private matters confidential.
