Against a Young Universe: What Was God Doing Before Creation?

“Because of my stand on a young universe, a man approached me and said, ‘But it makes no sense to believe in a young universe. After all, what was God doing all that time before He created?’” - Ken Ham

I like Ham’s counters to this argument. E.g., …

When I’m teaching children, I like to explain it this way. There was no “before” God created. There was not even “nothing”! There was God existing in eternity.

But let’s be honest—“What was God doing before…?” is just about the weakest argument there is for an old universe.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

I haven’t ever read someone argue that (including the above), but it not only seems a week argument, but pretty stupid as well. Even billions of years is just an insignificantly small amount of time in eternity. Today’s lack of education in math becomes even more obvious when hearing things like this.

To be honest, we don’t know. God could have created numerous universes over time and have done different things. We can’t comprehend what happens before “time”, but since it was not revealed, we don’t know and we can’t comprehend.

The way I understand it:

Time is a component of our physical world that God created. Time as we know it does not exist outside of creation. All of our time, past, and future is all “now” to God.

Proverbs 3:1-12

Refer the man to Deut 29:29 and tell him we are accountable to believe and obey God’s revealed will.
