New weight loss fad

Forum category
Several friends of mine are on board a new weight loss wagon- HCG, or http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/truth-about-hcg-for-weight-loss: human chorionic gonadotropin drops . As with many other things, this is something that is being promoted in churches, especially amongst women. And when I say ‘promoted’, I don’t mean from the pulpit- just amongst women who often trust each other’s judgment, deservedly or not.

These ladies are definitely losing weight- from 30 lbs to over 100 for one lady- but I’ve read the requirements of this diet, and the research, or lack thereof, supporting the idea that these hormones cause weight loss.

This is sort of a ministry question, but do any of you ‘do’ anything when you see several people in your church adopting, and encouraging others to adopt, a questionable practice?

with childrearing practices… . Mostly I just research so I have what to say ready, pray for open hearts and opportune moments, don’t project a critical spirit, try to gently bring in other influences, don’t remain silent when it’s possible to speak, and … very often leave it alone, though it kills me.

Mostly praying b/c it’s the work of the Holy Spirit to make us mature.

Thanks for answering, Anne. What concerns me is the transfer of trust that takes place without any critical thinking. IOW, Jane trusts Beth, so if Beth uses said method, then Jane will use it. But what Jane doesn’t know is that the reason Beth is using it is because Ethel is, and Beth trusts Ethel. But Ethel heard about if from Aunt Bertha, and Bertha heard it from Mary Lou. So really, Jane is trusting the judgment of Mary Lou, whom she has never met and could be as nutty as a fruitcake.

The idea of tricking the body into losing weight with hormones found in the urine of pregnant women gives me a serious case of the willies. It’s a dangerous shortcut, IMO, and the spiritual implications should not be ignored. But American Christians get really upset when you start talking about weight loss and eating healthy and exercising.

you’re funny, susan, and it’s probably a true analysis. they do no other research? i know a lady using this diet and she researches everything to the max. i’ve never looked into it, and if it’s new, it might not have a lot of research behind it, just theory.

I’m studying maturity in Ephesians, and one element of maturity is clinging to the truth.

Ephesians 4:14-15 14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ.”

amen, even with diet plans :)

One lady I know has ‘researched’ HCG, but I don’t know what sources she’s used. If you Google it, the first bazillion links are all places that sell and support the practice. But the link I put in the OP is to WebMD which has info about research showing that the touted benefits have never been proven, and there are some possible side effects. Also, the diet restricts you to a 500 calorie a day maximum- who wouldn’t lose weight doing that?
