Looking past all of the stylistic differences of music and format, one of the biggest questions Christians must answer about their corporate and personal worship today concerns its activity. Is worship active or passive, enacted or experienced? Should we come to the weekly gathering of God's people to get or to give? I submit that these differences in approach to the weekly gathering and personal devotional time, while seemingly subtle and nuanced, are great in terms of implication.

On several occasions I have had the distinctly unpleasant experience of not hearing much of what a preacher has to say.

“What are you talking about?”

About the unpleasant experience of not being able to hear what he says—I mean physically so!

“You’re getting deaf ! ”

It’s true that I am hard of hearing—but not quite so bad that if the speaker would talk loudly enough I’d get it all.

Actually, on some occasions the problem is that the speaker thinks because he has a mike, he can practically whisper his sermon. And prayers?  Well, I find myself praying alone since the problem is even magnified in prayer.
