Sola Fide?

I was recently involved in a discussion about the eternal disposition of pre-Columbian Americans. The way I understand our theology, since they did not accept Christ (they never knew of him), they died in their sins and went to hell. This is what I remember being taught in church, school, and Bible college. Thus, the fervor for missions. “The most sobering fact in the world is…that people are dying today and going to hell.”

The lady I was speaking with asserts that we cannot know this. They could have received the gospel via special revelation, or God could have made an exception for them (as he does with the mentally handicapped and infants). I was surprised to hear her theory, especially the part about exceptions. We were taught our theology in very similar circumstances, yet she sincerely believes that this is what she has been consistently taught.

My questions are twofold:

1. What were you taught (at BJU, Masters, your local church, by your parents, etc.)?

2. Which position do you hold?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
