Rick Perry at Liberty University: "My faith journey is not the story of someone who turned to God because I wanted to,” he said. “It was because I had nowhere else to turn"

[Paul J. Scharf]
[Jim Peet] Romney - Perry
???????????????????????????????????????????

Joking, right?
Really because:
  • I like Romney at the top of the ticket. He has solid business experience
  • Perry is a good counterbalance:
    • Religion: Evangelical vs Mormon
    • Geographical: Texas vs Massachusetts

  • Both solid campaigners

Aside from Romney’s numerous theological and political problems, including the fact that he is not — by any reasonable standard — a true conservative, I believe he would lose to Obama in a landslide. His nomination would demoralize the Republican base in a way that would leave people yearning for Bob Dole and John McCain.
BTW — until disproven, I do not buy the conventional wisdom that Obama is going to be swept out of office. Remember, he starts with nearly 50 percent of the vote in terms of public employees and others who are dependent on the government — and that number has increased astronomically over the past four years.
With Romney as the nominee, it really wouldn’t matter that much who wins anyway, as his policies and Obama’s would not be that much different.
Jim, if I am wrong on any count, you are free to say, “I told you so.” 8-)

This writer does not want Mitt Romney for President of the United States. If nominated I will not vote and if elected I will not support. There are several reasons:

1. The Mormon Church — A religion that has been persecuted tends to persecute when it gains power. Revenge will be awfully tempting. I don’t want to give them the chance

2. Pragmatism — Romney is a pragmatist, pure and simple. He changes political positions at the drop of a hat. See abortion and MassCare

3. The Republican Party — Both political parties have “lost their ball in the weeds,” to quote my dear wife. The current Democrat Party is somewhere between European-style Social Democrats and outright Communists. The Republican Party mechanism is inflexible because it is dominated by “leaders” who want to keep the status quo. If that means spending tons of money in Washington, so be it. “We’ll just spend a ton less.” It hates Conservatives every bit as much as do the Democrats. It’s motto is “Vote Republican: We’re not as bad as you think.”

4. Money — Both parties will “follow the money,” wherever it comes from: The Mormon Church, trade unions, Wall Street, enviornmentalists, foreign governments, even drug lords. No money is dirty to politicians. It is said that Obama will raise a billion dollars for his campaign. Romney has the necessary resources behind him. That is why he will likely win the GOP nomination. A true Conservative candidate will be forced to depend upon the “Click Here to Donate” button on a website

My current choice is Rick Santorum. He doesn’t have a chance to win. My second choice is not in the race. Apparently she wants the attention given to a Presidential candidate but not the scrutiny. Our nominee must come from someplace else. He or she has an awful lot of work to do. Please get going!

[jimfrank] 2. Pragmatism — Romney is a pragmatist
Everyone who has ever voted is a pragmatist.

My current choice is Barack Obama. He saved us from George W. Bush’s economy and is getting us out of war.

If this is being “saved,” I’d hate to see what being lost would look like.

bwahahahahahahahahahaha

Just wanted to see what people would say. Tee hee. Also, I don’t think we should assume that only political conservatives are welcome at this forum. Liberals, if you’re out there, please chime in.

It is interesting though, I live outside DC, and I have a lot of liberal to very liberal friends. They are no where near as excited now as they were in 2008. I was at dinner with about 15 of them Saturday night, and you can sense a palpable fear that Obama was a) not the change they had been looking for and b) was going to get defeated.

I haven’t found a candidate that I absolutely love. Each has it’s problems. I’ll probably end up voting for Perry even though his attempts to sell himself to the Christian right using religion concern me slightly, and I don’t have time to get into why.

In a perfect world, I would love NJ Gov. Chris Christie to get in, but I know he won’t. He knows how to sell conservative principles to moderate voters. In order to win long term, we have to turn moderates into conservatives. If we’re going to have another Reagan revolution, we need to be able to reteach the vast middle why conservatism works. Most candidates right now are playing only to the base of the party.

I appreciate you clearing that up Shane. I now feel that I can speak to you Sunday.

There might be more Democrats in our church than you realize Ron, maybe like 40 percent?

I was a Democrat when I was that age too. ;)

Ron,

Democrats were far different back then :p

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?
