Julie Herbster (wife of Matt Herbster) promoted to glory

Around 1:30 this afternoon, Julie was promoted to be with her Savior. We are grieving at our loss, but rejoicing for Julie. She now knows about the things that are unseen. She no longer is walking by faith for she is with her King! God has prepared for her a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. II Corinthians 4-5

Julie and Matt have provided a powerful example of trusting in the Lord for His help in times of suffering. I offer my love prayers and highest respect to the Matt and his precious children. I purpose to remember to continue to learn from the example our Lord provided through Julie.
I was just wondering the other day why Julie was never on SI any more. Very sad news. I am so sorry for her family.
Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?
As I have been reading about their family their pilgrimage, I have been very encouraged and challenged by the godly example of Matt and Julie.
Looking forward to that day when we are all within the gates of the New Jerusalem in the presence of Christ - tears wiped away.

Julie and I only spoke in person perhaps four or five times, usually in the Wilds dining hall when I was there for one reason or another, but we interacted often online on SI, in another forum, and privately. She could think clearly, express herself beautifully, and discuss difficult topics with men and women alike, yet always with a graciousness that showed her Christlike spirit. I will miss her.
I think that Julie was one of the first women I remember seeing on SharperIron, and I always found her posts to be thoughtful, kind, and well said. I grieve for Matt and the kids, but if she lived as well as she posted, then her life was well spent and a credit to the Master. I know that she was a blessing to my wife as well.
Will be keeping Matt and all in my prayers. I was listening to this song when I got word, and the lyrics are appropriate, so I’ll share them:

is really sad. It’s wonderful to have lived such a spiritually rich and faith-filled live at such a young age, but hard leaving family behind at this time. Julie was an amazing person—thankful I got to meet her here.
I always felt that Julie was a good example of thoughtful, kind, and intelligent communication. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

I debated posting this, because this is a difficult time, and I don’t want to add to anyone’s grief. However this announcement is troubling. While I’m sure they have someone advising them, people can only make tax deductible contributions for this if the gifts are run through the 501(c)(3)…and if they are using funds donated to the ministry and receipted as charitable contributions to pay for personal expenses for an officer and/or his family that can get really deep in the weeds in a hurry. At minimum it creates the appearance of a conflict of interest for the non-profit, and the IRS is in crackdown mode on things like that right now.
I certainly don’t want to discourage anyone who wishes to help the Herbsters from during so, nor do I think they are in any way attempting to do anything wrong or underhanded. I have reviewed their recent 990s, and they are certainly not using the ministry as a personal piggy bank. But there are some red flags in what’s being described that could lead to trouble. If you do want to give, I would strongly advise you do so personally and directly rather than through the ministry. It will “cost” you a small amount for the tax deduction you won’t get (and such gifts to regular memorial/expense funds are NOT deductible under normal circumstances) but it may prevent a bigger problem for them down the road.
(Brief qualifying remarks—I grew up in the home of a tax preparer and have personally done many hundreds of individual, corporate and non profit tax returns over the years.)
Since I’ve received some feedback, I want to clarify what I said (the time for editing the original having passed). I did not intend to imply that Matt is an officer at Herbster Evangelistic Ministries. My point was his status as a family member of the officers and the implications that follow from that. And when I said the Herbsters were not using the ministry as a “personal piggy bank” that was intended to be a compliment to the way they operate. I certainly do not want to leave the impression there is anything shady going on. I think, for the reasons stated above, that this need could and should be handled more wisely, but I do not believe they are attempting to mislead or mistreat anyone.
Please do help them as you feel led. I know what it is like to walk away from a funeral where there are loads of people and then wonder where they all went a few weeks later. These are good people, and they need love and support right now.
